Tommy Minburra has lived his life by the oceans surrounding Elcho Island in the Arafura Sea, off the coast of North East Arnhem Land. He is a man of the Warrawirri clan and the clouds and rocks above and around the sea are two of his totems.
Tommy is an experienced carver. He makes spears, sculptures and clan poles. He is also a painter. In early 2009 he commenced making limited edition reduction wood cut prints during workshops at Elcho Island arts with printmakers Basil Hall, Antonia Aitken and Sean Smith from Basil Hall Editions in Darwin. Tommy’s prints offer abstract impressions of the natural formations that make up his seaside home of Galiwin’ku, the main community on Elcho Island.
