Fish Trap

Jeremy Gumana

A painting with Buyku (fish trap) painting belonging to the Yirritja Moiety. The fish are called Baypinŋa (Saratoga). The diamonds represent the water where the fish trap is laying. The coloured diamonds surrounding the fish trap (top and bottom) we call Norrutj. We place paperbark over the fish trap and the colours from the bark create a colourful reflection on the water. The white raak surrounding the hollow log represents the bush string and pandanus weavings holding the fish trap together. The dots surrounding the fish represent the air bubbles from the fish.
